St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Established 1867. With memorial for the boys of Mohegan Lake School who perished in “…the World War”. This is presumably World War I. At the time everyone thought that this would be “The War to End All Wars”. Little did they know that only a little over 20 years later there would be a second World War. Nobody referred to this one as “The War to End All Wars”. Optimism for the future had disappeared.
My father was a soldier in the British army in World War II. After it ended he was convinced that it wouldn’t be long before there would be a third.
