I had always thought along the following lines. First there was Carl Zeiss. They made lenses. Then there was Zeiss Ikon. They made cameras – and then they didn’t. Of course there was the added complexity of the West and East German brands, but other than that it seemed fairly clear.
Then one day when we in Geneva our daughter was going out and gave us a set of keys so that if we left we could get back into the house. Imagine my surprise when I noticed one of the most famous names of all camera/lens manufacturers on, of all things, a key.
Apparently they made locks and keys as well as cameras (See here for more explanation). Who would have thought?
